The Man Called Reverend Nathaniel Scates
A Native of Tennessee, one of seven children of the late Deacon Charlie Scates & Bertie Scates. He was educated in the public schools of Tennessee. He joined the Marines, and once in Portsmouth, Virginia he grew to love it. He joined the St. John Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Dr. Lathan. There he met and married the late Mrs. Clorrise Sivel Scates, and they became the parents of three daughters, two sons and also raised their grandson and granddaughter as their own.  With a love of gospel music, he sang lead with the "Gospel Kings" quartet for twenty years and with the "Gospel Superiors for seven years. His thunderous voice was so enjoyed that he was often asked to sing one of his favorites "This Ole Building Keep on Leaning". When he was a member of the "Gospel Superior", he received the call of the Master to preach His word. And being an obedient child of God, he heeded the call. He evangelized throughout the area and was soon ordained and licensed to preach the gospel.
In September l985, he accepted the call at Tabernacle Baptist Church to become the pastor elect and in January
1986 he began his official duties as pastor. As the pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Outreach Center he stresses education of the Word, and has always been instrumental in developing the growth of the youth. He has been a mentor to many ministers. Under his leadership his son Pastor Nathaniel Scates Jr. of Lighthouse Ministry Suffolk Virginia; his daughter Minister Maria Scates of JCTOD in Utica, New York; his grandson Jermaine Scates of Tabernacle Baptist Outreach Center and Minister Edward Mcnair were ordained.
In September 2010, the church under the leadership of Pastor Scates dedicated it new building which included a
new sanctuary, a larger pastor's study, larger kitchen, more class room spaces and a new fellowship hall.
Pastor Scates has been a Prayer Partner for over 24 years. We know God truly blessed us at TBOC when he called the man, and then sent the man to be the man we love and call Pastor Nathaniel Scates Sr.
